Historic Flying Fox

LESLEY’S LAMSON RAPID WIRE “FLYING FOX”

Origins of the Lamson Rapid Wire at Lesley’s of Gawler, commonly known as a ‘Flying Fox’, date back to 1925 when it was first installed by the Sheard Family ran the drapery out of the Essex House building since the early 1900s.

Until card payments were introduced when HB Crosby occupied the building, this was the main payment system where payment for items was carried along the wire to the back office clerk, who returned the change and payment receipt along the line.

ONLY  7 OPERATIONAL FLYING FOX’ IN AUSTRALIA

We’re proud to hold a special part of history within the main street of Gawler, holding one of just seven operational flying foxes in Australia… and it’s still usable today thanks to regular repairs by the expertise of Lamson engineers and our talented locals at Willo’s Men’s Shed!

Come and visit next time you’re in Gawler!

For the first time in decades, our Flying Fox (Lamson Rapid Fire) payment system will be in operation on Wednesday 5th June for cash sales.

We’ll be using it all day from 9:30am to 5:30pm for cash sales, along with providing handwritten dockets from Crosby’s that pre-date phone area codes!

Can’t make this date?
Stay tuned for our next operation date, we hope to run regular Flying Fox days to showcase this wonderful old-fashioned service.
